Briefer discussions of classical maxims in connection with two films by Stanley Kubrick ( Barry Lyndon, 1975 Full Metal Jacket, 1987) round off the paper. But the greatest variety of the use of antiquity in the war film, both verbal and visually, occurs in Patton (1970), illustrating the continuity from ancient to modern warfare. ![]() The Thin Red Line (1998), set in World War II, refers to Homer to criticize military elitism and incompetence. Simonides’ epitaph on the Spartan dead at Thermopylae is the starting point for an examination of the traditional heroism of World War I in Tell England (1931) and King and Country (1964) and of the American involvement in Vietnam in Go Tell the Spartans (1974). The Dawn Patrol (1930) and Grand Illusion (1937) deal with the end of chivalrous heroism in World War I. In the films chosen for discussion, classical models appear as justification for and exhortation to military service or, by contrast, as a means to question blind patriotism and to criticize military irresponsibility.Īll Quiet on the Western Front (1930), rightly regarded as the greatest of all anti-war films, shows the common view of Horace’s dulce et decorum to be false, not only in the story it tells but also through quotations from Homer, Ovid, and the Gesta Romanorum. Homer’s Iliad and Horace’s line from Odes 3.2 quoted in the title provide the starting point for an analysis of the influence of the ancient code of heroism on modern education and on attitudes toward war. This is Aster's Synecdoche, New York, with Charlie Kaufman's melancholic self-loathing subbed out for a mother lode of mommy issues – and, like Kaufman's film, Beau Is Afraid is likely to strike some as a profound statement about the purgatorial nature of existence and others as a janky Rube Goldberg machine meant to purge the artist's fears of death and women. You certainly can't miss the Mariah Carey needle-drop that does for Always Be My Baby something like what David Lynch did for Roy Orbison's In Dreams in Blue Velvet. The soundtrack includes Shine by Australian 00s pop star Vanessa Amorosi. These realms are rich in details both hilarious and disquieting: Note the "O'Loha" microwave dinner Beau sups on (it's "the best of Hawaii and Ireland") the punny names of the sex shops on his street (Asstral Projection Erectus Ejectus) the many commemorative touches in the home of a deceased soldier's parents, including a custom jigsaw puzzle of his military portrait. Hence the erratically mushrooming story-world, with Beau traversing state lines, social strata, and even artistic media (an animated landscape takes over from live action in one extended sequence). The writer-director's analyst surely has their work cut out for them with his latest film: Beau Is Afraid is a cruelly absurd saga of sexual repression in which a slump-shouldered Joaquin Phoenix, as the emotionally stunted titular character, bears the brunt of Aster's spectacular catastrophising – realised here on a budget substantially roomier than that of either Hereditary or his 2019 follow-up, Midsommar. "That's how I end up writing stuff like this." "I'm very neurotic and I'm obsessed with worst-case scenarios," Ari Aster explained at a Q&A for Hereditary, his feted – and truly frightening – debut feature, when asked about his exhaustive pre-production process. ![]() Amazon is also enduring its largest round of layoffs and last week announced it is discontinuing Halo fitness and sleep trackers. Alexa was reportedly set to lose $10 billion in 2022, per an Insider report, and had failed to sufficiently engage users in ways that make Amazon money. It's no secret that belts are tightening at Amazon, compounding interest in making Alexa a strong revenue source. But while Google Assistant and Google's experimental Bard chatbot currently feel like different products with different uses, Amazon has dreams of uniting its generative AI efforts with its struggling Alexa business. Google, for example, has shut down third-party Google Assistant smart displays and reportedly shifted Assistant manpower to Bard. And the lack of evolution has left voice assistants surrounded by uncertainty. Put simply, Grid 2 deserves your attention. While voice assistants initially seemed to be a convenient, futuristic way to get information and perform basic tasks, they have barely graduated from that role. While some will question a few design decisions, the overall package delivers on many levels. It takes few risks yet scratches many itches, offering a compelling experience to fans on all sides of the racing spectrum. RaceNet-Codemasters’ service that ties all Grid 2 competitors together-further powers your friendly rivalries to expand Grid 2’s appeal once you’ve completed the single-player game.Īs a whole, Grid 2 is a slick, powerful racer that's the result of a clear vision of intense, streamlined competition. In addition, Global Challenges offer ways for you to compete asynchronously against your friends as well as pre-determined goals, allowing additional opportunities to gain valuable cash. ![]() Cars are unlocked as you level up and can be purchased with cold, hard cash-a distinct difference from the single-player methodology. In limited sessions, it's riotous-as with any online game, playing with friends and similarly-minded people virtually guarantees a good time. Grid 2’s online mode is entirely separate from the offline one. ![]() Multiple difficulty settings ensure you’ll find a comfortable level (even if it seems like the leader zooms way ahead at the start of some of the races). Thanks to the return of the "flashback" mechanic-the ability to rewind the action a bit several times per race-it doesn’t become a significant challenge to be victorious on standard difficulty until you’re well into the second major campaign. What’s more, the turns tend to be rather forgiving, and you won't need expert handling to quickly brake, turn, and gun it to make it through a difficult corner. While the controls can feel a bit unwieldy at first, it doesn’t take longer than a few trips around several tracks to get the hang of them. Grid 2 sits right in the middle of purely technical racers like Gran Turismo and full-on arcade games such as Burnout with no adjustments available to the cars, you’re stuck with the setup and have to learn how to make it work for you. It takes time-and a bit of practice-to get used to the rather jumpy handling of the vehicles. There isn’t a single track that looks anything short of fabulous. It’s clear that the development team has built upon its large foundation of previous titles to squeeze the maximum visual fidelity from the consoles. The locales all look spectacular, from redwood forests in California, to the Champs D’Elysses in Paris, or the gritty streets of Chicago-and many, many more. Winning the main events along the way will open up the World Series, with side races letting you unlock additional rides, as well as an available-anytime test track for you to practice (or just have some fun without the pressure of competition). The races themselves are wide and varied multi-car sprints, time attacks, eliminators, and drift accumulators are just some of the options. ".Grid 2 is a slick racer with a lot to offer racing fans of all stripes." Grid 2 is focused like a laser beam on getting you on the track, and the simple menus make it easy to do just that. Doing well gains you fans, and as your popularity increases, larger events are unlocked that become an increasingly challenging series of races while you start on city streets and back road courses, as your success increases so does the difficulty of locales and tracks like Red Bull Ring and Abu Dhabi. To do so, you participate in dozens of events across the Unites States, Europe, and Asia. A simple, streamlined narrative guides the single-player career mode as you work with an investor to create a World Series of Racing. ![]() From the moment you slide the disk into the console, you’re behind the wheel and on the track no need to worry about extraneous content or a cutscene-heavy storyline getting in the way. ![]() On Mobile, it is a lot easier, just highlighting and clicking copy then having a pop-up icon to one-click translate from (insert detected language) to (insert preferred language).
